In the News: The White Stripes Break-Up

The dynamic duo have made it official; The White Stripes have split up.

The band announced their break-up through a posting on their website. “The reason is not due to artistic differences or lack of wanting to continue, nor any health issues as both Meg and Jack are feeling fine and in good health. It is for a myriad of reasons, but mostly to preserve what is beautiful and special about the band and have it stay that way.” You can read the entire statement here.

We really should have seen it coming. The last time they toured was in 2007 promoting their sixth effort, Icky Thump. Then due to drummer Meg White's anxiety issues, the tour was cancelled. The last we saw of them together was on the final episode of Late Night With Conan O'Brien in February 2009, where the two performed “We're Going To Be Friends.” It's no secret that Jack has been quite busy with The Raconteurs as well as The Dead Weather. Meg on the other hand hasn't done much musically, but recently married Patti Smith's son, Jackson.

I liked the Stripes. I was never an overly obsessive fan, but I like their music and their awkward, yet cute pairing. I think it has something to do with the fact that their edgy, garage rock songs and quirky music videos played a significant role throughout my high school years, which of course helped develop my current taste in music. So, I feel really disappointed to hear about the split, but I guess it's always better to quit while you're ahead.

At least we'll always have gems like this to remember them by.
